Hume and the Rules of Justice
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the attitudes of
David Hume (1711-1776) regarding justice and
why justice is an artificial virtue. The
foundation of Hume’s thinking on morality is
the concept of sympathy, which he views as the
basis of interaction between people and the
wellspring of human happiness. He then defines
morality as the qualities that are approved in
whomever they happen to appear and by
virtually everybody else. As a result of such
thinking, he sets out to discover the broadest
possible grounds for those approvals. He finds
those grounds of approval in “feelings”
rather than “knowing” and determines that
moral decisions are established as a result of
moral sentiment. It is here that the concept
of utility arises. Hume asserts that qualities
are valued either for their agreeableness,
either to the owner of the quality or to the
person or persons affected by the quality.

Hume on Causality
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper that describes Hume's argument
against causality and argues that Hume's
contentions as to the limited nature of
causality are unfounded. Hume argues that
existing knowledge, created from the habitual
activities of man, is the only way to perceive
an object. Kant, among other philosophers,
have disagreed with Hume's belief, noting that
objects are based within the context of other
objects and causality is a necessary and
reasonable assertion. Two primary sources
cited.

Hume: Radical Empiricist's Principle
[ send
me this paper ]
6 pages in length. David Hume asserts the
radical empiricists principle: "All our
ideas come from impressions." The manner
by which one could determine the implications
this principle has upon the remainder of
Hume's philosophy is to digest the
philosopher's theories as a whole, rather than
compartmentalizing them into individual
sectors. Indeed, some may argue that Hume is
not consistent in his application of this
treatment; however, when one looks more
closely at the fundamental basis of Hume's
collective thoughts, it becomes significantly
easier to see that his consistency is not
worthy of questioning. Bibliography lists 2
sources.
