Epicurean
Ethics
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the Epicurean view
of good and evil (i.e., pleasure and pain) and
the part that knowledge plays in bringing the
happiness that should be the goal of every
individual. Epicurus (342-270 B.C.) maintained
that the pursuit of pleasure was not that
which could be procured through physical
enjoyments, but rather through contemplation.
Therefore knowledge can only contribute to the
happy life, for increased knowledge can bring
increased assurance that the Epicurean way is
the true one. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Ethics
And Faith
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Kierkegaard took issue with
Hegel's theory of faith and ethics, which
proved to spark one of the most profound of
history's philosophical debates. In exact
opposition to this theory, Kierkegaard attacks
Hegel's presumptuous attitude that humanity
can, in fact, consider itself a superior
entity over that of God's existence. Perhaps
Kierkegaard was more astounded by Hegel's
sheer audacity to assert that God's
superiority was only as significant as when it
existed in the concept of faith, as opposed to
the outright condemnation of such a theory.
Regardless of his motivation, Kierkegaard
regarded Hegel's philosophy of faith and
ethics to be truly erroneous, which he
unabashedly addressed in his book entitled
"Fear and Trembling." No additional
sources cited.

Leibniz's Theory of Monads
[ send
me this paper ]
A 4 page critique of Gottfield Wilheml
Leibniz's Monad theory which attempts to
describe a harmonious universe made up of an
infinite number of monads, or units, arranged
in a hierarchy and originating in the Supreme
Monad, which is God. The writer feels that
Leibniz's theory is both vague and
overstated-- leaving room open for much
question. No Bibliography.

[ send

Similar to Leibniz.wps, this 3 page essay
looks at some of the reasons for Leibniz's
creation of a Monad theory in light of the

opinion, the Monad theory was used to fill
some unseen "gap" created by unclear
ideas such as gravity.

Humanity's
Fate: Free Will Or Determinism?
[ send
me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Is one's life determined or
is it the result of free will? In establishing
the answer to this question, it is essential
that one understand the difference between the
two representations. When one is cast forward
by way of determinism, it is as though one has
absolutely no control over the various and
sundry occurrences that take place during
one's life. Free will, on the other hand,
speaks to the concept of having full authority
over one's aspirations and ultimate direction,
reflecting the exact opposite of those ruled
by determinism. Having adequately grasped the
meaning behind these divergent perspectives,
it can easily be argued that life is one's own
responsibility; instead of leaving all things
up to fate, an individual has a significant
influence upon his or her own existence.

Immanuel
Kant’s “Religion Within the Limits of
Reason Alone”
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the thinking of
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) who is often
described as one of the greatest of all
philosophers in relationship to what he wrote
and thought about religion and the “religion
of morality.” In Kant’s opinion, the moral
point of view is impartial and favors no
particular individual. Morality requires an
individual, according to Kant, that he or she
act on a maxim that they can universalize, in
other words that his or her reasons for a
certain action could be considered valid for
anyone in a comparable situation. Bibliography
lists 5 sources.

addressed is: If humans believe in God does
that mean that belief in God is reasonable? To

makes a conclusion as to the reasonableness of
the belief in God. Bibliography lists 8

Maritain: How Relevant Are His Ideas To
Teaching Religious Education In The
Contemporary Context?
[ send
me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The relevancy of Jacques
Maritain's ideas in the context of
contemporary religious teachings speaks to the
fundamental nature of Thomism, inasmuch as
Maritain was firmly rooted in St. Thomas and
the works of his major commentators. Working a
significant amount from the philosophies of
Aquinas, Maritain's ideas would incorporate
quite well into the basic tenets of today's
religious teachings. Bibliography lists 6

Martin
Buber’s “Hasidism and Modern Man” and
“The Legends of the Baal Shem”
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses two of the works
of Jewish philosopher Martin Buber
(1878-1965). His writings all have something
to do with what relationship the life of an
individual, Jewish or not, has with God. Buber
was convinced that people have the ability to
approach one another with a spiritual
connectedness that he referred to as “I-thou
encounters.” In such encounters, each person
finds “the other” to no longer be only an
object or another thing and can, therefore,
fully connect to another being. No secondary
sources.

Marx’s theories promoted anti-religious
sentiments. The writer explores Marx’s
training with Hegel and various views on
Marx’s treatment of religion. The writer

for the purpose of not confusing the issue of

critics who view Marx as being anti-religion
to the point of stealing ideas from religion.
Of Marx’s theories explored are “The
German Ideology” and the “Manifesto of the
Communist Party.” Bibliography cites 10

Nietzsche's
Eternal Return
[ send

what Nietzsche could have meant when he
composed this interesting notion, and what his
underlying theories must have meant.

What Grounds, If Any, Does It Make Sense To
Believe That God Exists?
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Characteristic of
humanity's constant quest for the concept of
God's existence, the journey of understanding
has come to represent myriad things to myriad
people, ultimately rendering any universal
explanation virtually impossible. The problem
with such sought-after meaning is attempting
to successfully pinpoint a single yet
comprehensive connotation to its concept;
however, this cannot be achieved as long as
any two individuals harbor decidedly different
interpretations. Upon examination of the
foundationalists and nonfoundationalists
(Descartes, Marx, Aquinas, Kant), one gains a
significantly better perspective of these
varying interpretations. Bibliography lists 5
sources.

Analysis of a Television Show -- “Touched by
an Angel”
[ send
me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the semiologic
aspects of the prime-time television show
“Touched by an Angel.” In contemporary
popular culture, television serves as one of
the best possible representations of how it is
possible to understand larger realities about
society and social beliefs via the stories
told and symbols presented. The popular
prime-time show “Touched by an Angel”
illustrates such a process. The show is almost
an ancient morality play in which the players
learn greater truths about themselves and the
world in which they live. The symbols and
signals presented as a common denominator in
each episode fit into a number of the
assumptions made by Western humanity regarding
“seeing the light” and personal
redemption. Bibliography lists one source.

A 6 page critical review of the story by D.T.
Niane. Briefly relates this age-old story from
Western Africa. Emphasizes that this brief
story manages to incorporate many critical
aspects of culture, of conflict, and even of
sorcery and magic. It is a story of
friendship, of interpersonal relationships and
a story of destiny. It is also a story,
however, which provides an interesting basis
for the question of whether an individual is
responsible for their own destiny. In "Sundiata:
An Epic of Old Mali" we have a situation
in which oral tradition proves to be a ready
target for a contemporary theoretic approach
to the subject of destiny. No additional

Theodicy
- The Problem of Evil
[ send

(5 pp) According to Nichols (1998), theodicy
(from theos and dikê, 'justice,' hence

is important because we need to show that the

existence of evil.' Our initial thought is if
God equals goodness and love, what is the need
- or is there one - for evil in the world?
this discussion will examine that question.
